England
Rob Davies and Mike Jacobs have been friends since school. When Mike decides to travel to Spain to fight fascism, Rob is torn between loyalty to his best friend and his love for Annie, the girl of his dreams. Seeing Rob’s hesitancy, Annie makes a decision that will place them both in untold danger.

Germany
Hans and Karin Kohl have lost their father to suicide and their mother to alcoholism and brutal murder. Hans vows to protect his sister, despite her marriage to Andreas Sturm, which seems happy until he introduces another woman into their relationship. Meanwhile, Gerhard Emmet, facing disappointment at home, joins the anti-fascists in Spain, where he meets Mike Jacobs.

Poland
Wiktor Sosnkowski and his family live happily on their farm until the threat of war divides them. His eldest daughter Felcia marries a Polish officer and moves away, his two sons, Alek and Stani join the army and Raisa, who has always craved the limelight, begins to attract the wrong kind of attention from the invading forces.

For each individual, their actions have far-reaching consequences that will revisit them and their loved-ones throughout the passing years.
This is the first of a five part chronicle, telling several inter-woven stories through the Spanish Civil War and World War Two.
